Language Centre
Teaching
The Language Centre is responsible for teaching languages in all types of degree programmes at all faculties of the University of Defence in accordance with valid accreditations. The Centre provides instruction of English as a compulsory first foreign language for students of all faculties and furthermore ensures instruction of French, German, Russian and Czech for foreigners. The Centre also participates in the life-long learning programme of academic staff and military professionals of the Ministry of Defence, which prepares them for passing the NATO STANAG 6001 language exam. The Centre also partakes in maintaining their language competency and improving terminology knowledge in the scope of military healthcare, air traffic management, aircraft and helicopter maintenance.
Language teaching is conducted in accordance with the latest trends in pedagogical theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages.
To meet the requirements of the Army of the Czech Republic and the UoD, foreign language teachers have created e-learning courses that provide military professionals and UoD students with a number of interactive exercises focused on their self-study. The JAPA (Languages for the Army) e-learning platform contains training modules in English, French, Russian and German with a focus on passing the NATO STANAG 6001 exam. E-tests are an integral part of JAPA and practice reading, listening comprehension skills as well as vocabulary and grammar skills.
In addition to face-to-face classroom teaching, the Centre also provides consultation lessons and Discussion Clubs for UoD students and consultations in self-study centres for employees of the Ministry of Defence.
